A growing demand for top quality African carbon offsets
Many companies and individuals in Southern Africa are waking up to the need to monitor, manage, mitigate and now, importantly, offset their carbon footprint. This trend is being driven both by public opinion and awareness that sooner or later there will be some form of legislated requirement. The first movers are staking their claim – and in many cases, securing future sources of carbon offsets. In 2009, two large South African corporates, Nedbank and Avis Car Rental declared their intention to go carbon neutral from 2009 onwards. Both have bemoaned that despite a desire to offset their footprints with quality offsets from the African continent, and more specifically from South Africa, quality offsets are not widely available.
