The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved €28 million in funding to support the construction of solar power plants in Gassi and Lamadji, Chad. This initiative is part of the AfDB’s broader Desert to Power program, aimed at expanding energy access across Africa through renewable energy solutions.
Funding Breakdown
The project’s funding package includes:
- €20 million in direct support, comprising a combination of loans and grants from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA).
- €8 million in financial guarantees, with equal contributions of €4 million each from the African Development Fund and the Green Climate Fund.
This financial structure underscores a collaborative effort among multiple stakeholders to ensure the success of Chad’s clean energy transition.
Transforming Chad’s Energy Infrastructure
The Gassi and Lamadji solar project is a cornerstone of Chad’s Desert to Power plan. It is set to:
- Boost power supply by 20%, enhancing energy access for households and businesses.
- Shift Chad’s energy reliance from expensive, fossil fuel-based power to affordable, sustainable energy sources.
The project will construct two solar power plants on the outskirts of N’Djamena, each with a capacity of 15 megawatts peak (MWp). It will also include:
- New power substations and connection lines.
- A 6-megawatt-hour battery storage system to ensure a steady energy supply during non-sunny periods.
The total project cost is estimated at €41 million, with additional contributions expected from other Development Finance Institutions (DFIs).
