Nigeria has reinforced its commitment to global sustainability during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) held in the United Arab Emirates. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the country’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and its pivotal role in Africa’s green energy transition.
Nigeria’s Path to Sustainability
Ambassador Tuggar outlined key initiatives under Nigeria’s sustainability strategy, including:
- Afforestation Programs: Efforts to restore degraded landscapes and combat desertification.
- Renewable Energy Infrastructure: Investments in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.
- Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Programs aimed at adapting farming practices to climate change.
He further highlighted Nigeria’s alignment with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing the country’s leadership in balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Decade of Gas Initiative and Renewable Energy Investments
As part of its energy transition plan, Nigeria presented its Decade of Gas Initiative, which positions natural gas as a transitional energy source. Concurrently, the country is scaling investments in renewable energy technologies, enhancing its reputation as a leader in Africa’s energy transformation.
Ambassador Tuggar reiterated:
“As Africa’s largest economy, we recognize our duty to lead by example and champion a sustainable future for our continent and the world.”
Call for International Collaboration
The Minister also stressed the importance of global partnerships in tackling sustainability challenges. Key areas of collaboration include:
- Climate Financing: Increased funding support for African nations.
- Technology Transfer: Sharing innovations to accelerate the adoption of green technologies.
- Capacity-Building: Strengthening local expertise in implementing sustainable practices.
“The world is at a critical juncture where the choices we make today will define the legacy we leave for future generations. Nigeria stands ready to collaborate with global partners to ensure no nation or region is left behind in the quest for a sustainable future,” Ambassador Tuggar stated.

The Minister, on behalf of Nigeria, extended appreciation to the UAE for hosting ADSW and fostering meaningful dialogue on sustainability issues.
