At COP29 which held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Indigenous leaders and climate activists unveiled two groundbreaking campaigns: “The Tax Their Billions Dossier” and the “Energy of the People” campaign. These initiatives called wealthy nations and billionaires to take greater responsibility for climate solutions, focusing on sustainable energy and equitable funding.
Energy of the People Campaign
The campaign, Energy of the People, also known as “Energia Dos Povos,” is a decolonial movement that is advocating for energy justice in the Brazilian Amazon. It emphasizes clean, reliable energy access while safeguarding Indigenous rights.
Key Objectives:
- Indigenous Leadership: Amplifying renewable energy solutions pioneered by Indigenous and traditional communities.
- Energy Justice: To prioritize sustainable energy policies to replace diesel-powered generators, which many Amazonian communities still rely on.
- Systemic Change: Empowering local decision-making regarding energy choices to foster a just energy transition.
Ilan Zugman, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at 350.org, highlighted the significance of this campaign:
“In the world’s largest rainforest, the renewable energy revolution is about more than just installing solar panels. It’s about human rights, inclusion, and enabling communities to make their own decisions about energy choices.”
Tax Their Billions Dossier
The second initiative, Tax Their Billions Dossier targets ultra-wealthy individuals, including Bernard Arnault and the Batista Brothers, and accuses them of insufficient tax contributions while benefiting from industries fueling climate change.
Proposed Solution:
Progressive taxation on extreme wealth could unlock trillions of dollars to finance climate solutions, particularly for vulnerable communities in the Global South.
Nicolas Haeringer, Associate Director of Movement Support at 350.org, explained:
“Taxing the super-rich is an efficient way to achieve climate justice. They hold resources and bear responsibility for ecological destruction and climate change.”
Global Actions and Impacts
These campaigns coincide with protests worldwide, including in Rio de Janeiro, Germany, and France. Advocates demand that COP29 negotiators and G20 leaders in Rio de Janeiro commit to taxing billionaires and funding climate efforts.
Mariana Paoli, Global Policy Lead at Christian Aid, stressed:
“The NCQG is a unique opportunity to keep 1.5 alive and deliver climate justice. This is about fairness and political will. The money is out there; now it’s time to act.”
The Energy of the People campaign and Tax Their Billions Dossier could be said to showcase innovative approaches to tackling climate injustice. With objectives focusing on systemic change and equitable funding, these initiatives infact do highlight the need for collective action to ensure a sustainable future for all.
