The Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) has launched its groundbreaking Distributed Energy Resources (DER) platform, an initiative aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy.
The platform, unveiled in Lagos on November 30, 2024, provides Nigerians with tools and resources to adopt clean energy solutions. Key features include a solar energy calculator, financing options, policy guidelines, and a verified directory of installers and resellers. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Vision 30:30:30, which aims to generate 30,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030, with 30% sourced from renewable energy.
Addressing Nigeria’s Energy Challenges
Speaking at the launch, Professor Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, CADEF’s Executive Director, emphasized the urgent need for accessible, accurate information about renewable energy systems such as solar panels and charge controllers.
“Nigeria’s electricity demand far outstrips supply, and rural areas suffer the most,” she said. “Beyond adoption, education and training are critical to equipping young Nigerians with the skills to maintain and manufacture renewable energy systems. A complete overhaul of our educational curriculum is needed to integrate renewable energy technologies.”
The DER platform bridges knowledge gaps, empowering users to make informed decisions about adopting clean energy solutions.
Financial Support and Policy Advocacy
Ndukwe-Okafor also stressed the importance of financial support and government incentives in scaling renewable energy adoption.
“The DER platform highlights institutions offering loans for clean energy projects. However, the government must eliminate tariffs on renewable energy imports and provide tax incentives for businesses adopting these technologies,” she stated.
Training the Next Generation of Innovators
CADEF is committed to building a green economy. Its Green Labs Incubation Program, developed in collaboration with Jacobs Ladder, trains young Nigerians in renewable energy entrepreneurship and sustainable business practices. Over 80 participants have been trained so far.
“Our mission is to nurture individuals who not only sustain themselves but also create jobs and contribute to Nigeria’s green economy,” Ndukwe-Okafor said.
A Vision for Local Renewable Energy Production
CADEF envisions Nigeria becoming a leader in local renewable energy production. A thriving renewable energy sector could bolster industries, manufacturing, and Nigeria’s competitiveness on the African continent.
With opportunities emerging in fields such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and sustainable energy, CADEF encourages young Nigerians to seize these growth areas.
The DER platform and programs like Green Labs Incubation represent decisive steps toward achieving Nigeria’s Vision 30:30:30. By addressing gaps in knowledge, skills, and financing, CADEF is paving the way for a sustainable, energy-secure future.
