Azura Power West Africa is set to inaugurate a 240-kilowatt solar-powered car park at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) on Tuesday. This groundbreaking project aligns with Nigeria’s energy transition goals and President Bola Tinubu’s reforms in the power sector.
A Step Towards Sustainability
The solar car park is a part of Azura’s “Power to Change” programme and underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. According to Murtala Bello, Head of Corporate Affairs at Azura Power, this initiative is not just about infrastructure but a commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Bello also stated that “The solar car park represents a significant step towards fostering educational and social development through renewable energy, benefiting approximately 2,650 engineering students by meeting 75% of the faculty’s energy needs.”
Key Features of the Solar Car Park
- Energy Generation: The solar installation is projected to generate over 400,000 kWh of clean energy annually. This will ensure a steady and reliable power supply for the university, enhancing academic activities and overall learning experiences.
- Economic Impact: With an investment of N900 million, the project is expected to save UNN approximately N150 million annually in energy costs.
- Contribution to Net-Zero Goals: Azura Power is actively supporting Nigeria’s net-zero ambitions through such initiatives, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing the country’s renewable energy landscape.
Supporting Nigeria’s Energy Transition
The unveiling ceremony of the park will be conducted by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. Bello emphasized Azura Power’s role in Nigeria’s energy transition journey, stating, “This project exemplifies our commitment to sustainable livelihoods, health, education, and infrastructure.”
Azura Power allocates $1 million annually for projects that promote sustainability, education, and community development, further cementing its position as a leader in the renewable energy sector.
Broader Implications
The solar car park at UNN is more than just an addition to the university’s facilities. It symbolizes a shift towards renewable energy adoption in educational institutions, setting a precedent for other universities and organizations in Nigeria.
Azura Power’s solar-powered car park at UNN marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy journey. By aligning with the country’s energy transition goals and supporting education through sustainable practices, this initiative paves the way for a cleaner, greener future.
