Solar power integrator Solsquare has collaborated with Germany’s Maxx Solar Academy to introduce a solar training academy in South Africa, boosting installation standards in the photovoltaic industry.

The academy is based at Solsquare’s premises in Centurion.

The first solar technician course for local technicians and consultants was held last week. Several German facilitators travelled to South Africa to kick-start the local training in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Solsquare MD Niels von Hase said poor quality installations were tarnishing the reputation of solar power systems in South Africa. “We saw a great opportunity to inject a high level of know-how and professionalism into the training of local solar power technicians and consultants.”

Courses provided by the Maxx Solar Academy include an introduction to photovoltaics, installation of photovoltaic systems, planning and design of solar plants, marketing, quality assurance, regulations and the rules and regulations pertaining to solar energy systems.

Other courses offered include solar power consultant, solar power technician and solar power planning expert qualifications. The academy also provides training in Cape Town and Durban.

As part of their training, participants are sent to sites, where solar powered systems are being installed to see real life examples of the skills they are being taught.

Local content has been included in the curriculum, such as regulations and the adaptation of solar systems to suit the local environment and market.

The Maxx Solar Academy is endorsed by the German Society for Solar Energy.
