South Africa could supply wind towers to the region as heavy engineering group DCD began construction of a $33.39-million facility at the Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

The wind tower factor, a joint initiative among DCD, the Industrial Development Corp. (IDC), and Coega Development Corp., is expected to create around 200 jobs and produce between 110 and 120 wind towers annually.

DCD entered into an agreement with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Vestas. DCD began work on a single tower for a wind turbine at its Vereeniging manufacturing facility, where the company manufactured four sections and the flanges in-house. Having successfully completed this prototype in 2012, the company concluded that it had the necessary expertise to become a leader in the industry.
