Next week New York City will host the leaders of every country in the world for a special United Nations Climate Summit. Convened by the United Nations Secretary General, this summit is the last opportunity for political leaders to discuss a global climate deal before the deadline in Copenhagen , this December. But right now, there’s very little public pressure surrounding this summit. Without a large public showing in New York, this meeting could start and end with little attention directed on it. And that would invariably lead to a less ambitious outcome, farther away from the goal we’re all aiming for: a treaty that gets us back to 350 parts per million CO2 – the carbon threshold that scientists believe we must not pass if we are to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change.
