Sustainable living nongovernmental organisation Mama Earth will host a green economy business breakfast in Johannesburg on April 11, 2011, where the link between government’s industrial policy plans and South Africa’s sustainable development commitments will be explored.

Chairperson Dr Ruth Rabinowitz says it is hoped that the event will create a platform to clarify government policy on energy efficiency, carbon taxes and climate change, as well as to provide an understanding of the incentives on offer for environment-friendly practices and green industries.

“There is a lot that is unclear with regard to the green economy, and business is waiting to understand how to access the incentives around these practices, and how to start implementing green programmes,” she says.

Mama Earth aims to attract about 150 people to the event, which is open to business executives, visiting government official, as well as the general public.

The Keynote speakers will be the Department of Trade and Industry’s deputy director-general Nimrod Zalk, who will discuss green industries and industrial energy-efficiency strategies.

The event will also be addressed by Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies programme manager for sustainable growth Peet de Plooy, and information technology specialist and adventurer Ray Chaplin, who is preparing to undertake the first human-powered circumnavigation of the world intersecting the North and South Poles, in May.

Tickets for the event are R200 for the first 30 and increase by R50 for every 30 thereafter.
