Staff at BP’s Offices in Cape Town (known as the “Green Building”) utilise energy and water in an efficient and environmentally conscious way.
The building was designed to be as energy efficient as possible, yet still effective as a working environment for day to day business.
As part of its overall target for energy savings BP South Africa set out to generate close to 10% of its energy use from solar power. A solar photovoltaic system of 67kWpeak was installed on the roof of the building consisting of about 400 solar modules. The system was installed in 2004 and is currently the largest grid connected solar photovoltaic system operating in South Africa.
Power Solutions installed twenty-two grid connected inverters which convert the electricity generated from the sun and feeds it into the electricity grid. A user-friendly communication system records the power generated and the carbon emissions avoided. This information is displayed live on a webpage and on a screen in the foyer of the building.
