Pretoria – Mnquma Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape will be amongst the first towns in South Africa to adapt a more environmentally approach to living.

Come 4 November, Water and Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will reveal the R41 million Mnquma Buyisela / Eco Town.

Reducing carbon emissions and keeping energy use under control is the basis of the Eco Town concept. The ambitious project aims to turn this community into one that places environmental matters at the heart of daily living.

Mquma is just one of 10 towns earmarked for this nationwide. It is hoped that a high standard will be set there, which will then be followed by the other nine municipalities.

The Eco Town concept is envisaged to provide a solution for the reduction of pollution by promoting recycling and reduction of waste, use of renewable energy, tree planting and maintenance.

Public facilities are also upgraded and open spaces cleared to gear communities towards fresher living.

Sites will also be established to prepare compost to make better use of biodegradable household waste. Food gardens will also be set up.

The project has so far created 283 jobs in Mnquma.

The handover ceremony will take place at the Coloured Sports Ground in Butterworth. – BuaNews
