South Africa’s power utility Eskom may be able to tap $1-billion in credit from the World Bank’s Clean Technology Fund to fund renewable energy projects, a Treasury official said on Thursday.
“There is an opportunity for Eskom to access [or] to open up credit lines [with] the Clean Technology Fund of the World Bank. At this stage we are looking at the option quite seriously,” Lungisa Fuzile, head of asset and liability management at the Treasury, told Reuters.
“It would be a figure in the vicinity of $1-billion and it will happen very soon, certainly before the end of this financial year.”
