The Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) has joined forces with Gareth Burley, a radio presenter on Kingfisher FM in Nelson Mandela Bay, in starting a national conversation about energy efficiency. Dubbed The Green Hour, this energy efficiency radio programme will be hosted by Gareth on Mondays between 1 and 2pmand was launched on the 4th of July 2011.
As consumers we have no other option than to choose to be energy efficient. Many megawatts are saved when each of us switches off what we don’t use in our homes. This effect could be duplicated hundreds of megawatts more if just one of us makes such a decision for a whole organisation to switch off. Join the national conversation on ‘The Green Hour’ and encourage the duplication effect of switching off. The SAEE’s aim for the past 10 years has been to create an awareness of energy efficiency to all industries in the Southern African region. That’s been done by making information available to companies, and also by creating opportunities like seminars, conventions, etc. for experts in the industry to share this information. The Green Hour is one of these opportunities.
Gareth presents the lunch show weekdays on Kingfisher FM, as well as being a sports writer for a national news agency. He is currently studying mechanical engineering part-time after 14 years of being a pastor. Gareth has a keen interest in spreading positive news regarding energy efficiency and believes it is important that we leave behind a sustainable legacy for generations to come. Kingfisher FM prides itself on being a positive radio station and conducts its business accordingly. While this is a pilot project based in the Eastern Cape, the programme material will be made available weekly to a web pod of 25 other national radio stations to use at their own discretion, as well as being made available on various social networks, blogs and websites.
Online broadcasting is available from www.kingfisherfm.co.za and news feeds can be found by joining the Facebook group The Green Hour – Kingfisher FMand GreenHourSA on Twitter.
