The Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) is a women’s global advocacy organization based in New York. Officially founded in 1991 in the run-up to the Earth Summit (UNCED, 1992,) WEDO, a champion for women’s rights, has built a reputation as a trailblazer in promoting human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment, notably in sustainable development.
For several years, WEDO has been a leading women’s organization, working with allies in the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) and the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) to advance gender-just climate policies, particularly with a focus on international policy via the UNFCCC and via monitoring and advocacy within climate finance entities such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the newly established Green Climate Fund (GCF) and mechanisms such as the Climate Investment Funds (CIF).
In a critical year for climate policy (on the road to COP21 in Paris), alongside parallel processes such as the Post-2015 Development agenda, a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and dialogue around Financing for Development (FFD), WEDO has renewed its focus on advocacy for and analysis of effective and just climate finance.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Monitor and track updates (via various listserves) on progress / developments on climate finance, particularly as related to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Climate Investment Funds (CIF);
- Monitor and make links to progress under the Financing For Development (FFD) process;
- Participate in weekly advocacy update call with the Advocacy and Communications Director and additional advocacy team members;
- Actively engage in the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA)-hosted ‘Climate Finance Working group’;
- Contribute to analysis and positions on climate finance of the Women and Gender Constituency;
- Support Advocacy and Communications Director in position as ‘Developed Country Observer’ on the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR) Sub-Committee of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), including review of project proposals, and effective collaboration with civil society partners;
- Coordinate, with key partners, new factsheet/ publication on climate finance, women’s rights and gender equality;
- Attend meeting in Washington D.C., April 24th, on the development of gender-responsive indicators in the Green Climate Fund;
- Attend UNFCCC climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany from June 1-12.
You are a fit for this Fellowship if:
- You are a dynamic and self-directed person eager to support research, analysis and advocacy on climate change finance;
- You are currently enrolled to attain (or have) a Masters degree in a field relevant to the position or at least three years working experience;
- You love acronyms! LOVE them;
- You have some experience and/or familiarity with international climate policy and the structure of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC);
- You have done initial desk research or study on international finance mechanisms, macro-economics and development and/or specifically on climate finance – i.e. the Green Climate Fund (GCF) or the Climate Investment Funds (CIF);
- You are passionate about women’s human rights, climate justice, sustainable development, environmental integrity, macroeconomic policies (and preferably the interconnections of all of the above);
- You would enjoy working and crafting analysis with leading advocates from around the world;
- You are willing and able to travel internationally to at least one two-week conference in June (June 1-12), with the possibility of additional travel as needed;
- You have excellent verbal & written communication skills in English (and preferably another UN language);
- You enjoy taking notes at meetings when necessary and you have an amazing attention to detail;
- You have between 25-30 hours per week, for 3 months, to dedicate to this position; and
- You are a critically thinking/ fun/ positive individual.
