The International Energy Agency (IEA) has forecast that hydropower could double its global energy contribution by 2050 and that much of this growth will occur in emerging economies.

There are many opportunities for hydropower developments in South Africa and in emerging economies such as Angola, Tanzania, Nigeria and other African countries, according to engineering group Aurecon.

Aurecon has recently provided multidisciplinary engineering services for the Kashimbila hydropower station in Nigeria and the Bethlehem hydro project in South Africa. It is currently assisting with the detailed design for the Otukpo hydropower station in Nigeria.

The group recently appointed former Eskom generation system engineering manager, Jimmy Goulding, who has nearly 30 years of experience in the energy industry to bolster its hydropower division.
