Given the success of the 2010 Adaptation Academy Foundation Course, and the feedback from the first participant group, the course curriculum is being expanded from 3 to 4 weeks. The Foundation Course is a 4-week intensive training event being developed through collaboration between the Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GCAP), the Climate Systems & Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town (CSAG-UCT) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Oxford Office. The first half of the Course (also known as the Winter School) takes place at the University of Cape Town and focuses heavily on climate science. The second half of the Foundation Course builds on the first two weeks by expanding on adaptation topics and techniques (screening and decision-making). Both parts balance between theoretical knowledge and practical applications.
The Foundation Course takes a customised approach to professional development that promotes and supports individual responsibility to learn and apply knowledge by linking core training modules on climate adaptation with each participant’s professional experience and work context. Real-life cases will be used to enable participants to reflect and learn through actual experiences. If you come as a group, you will have the option to develop a case that is directly based on your work. So in essence you are not even leaving work but simply relocating to Cape Town, South Africa where you will have direct access to data and expertise in a focused work environment. Those coming as individuals will take part in project group work as well as have the opportunity to focus on their own areas of specialisation and interest. The Foundation Course offers the opportunity to experience and learn about different cases and methods. And unlike other short courses, the Foundation Course is designed with breadth and depth of complex climate science as well as adaptation planning and implementation in various sectors.
The Foundation Course gives you direct access to experts in your field, teaches you about different approaches which you can directly apply to your work, provides you with networking opportunities among colleagues in your field and exposes you to some of the wonders of Cape Town.
The Adaptation Academy Foundation Course will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 11 July to 5 August 2011. The first half (the Winter School) will take place from the 11-22 July with the second part immediately after and until 5 August.
