Playing a role in the South African energy mix | Discover Siemens in Africa


“Today, in the Drakensburg Mountains in the eastern part of the country a pumped-storage electrical power plant with a capacity of 1,330 MW is being built.
Siemens is supplying the complete electro-mechanical equipment, including four pump-turbines, four motor-generators and the complete automation and control system. The plant will commence operation in 2013 and will contribute significantly to the country’s power grid stabilisation. In the future it could one day serve as an energy storage module in a smart grid. Siemens served as a local partner for Voith, which is building the plant and is responsible for the project. The company has also received an order for four more of these units for a power plant near Cape Town.”
