Eskom price shocker

“Eskom Holdings needs to raise its electricity tariffs by 48% over the next five years – even before accounting for the effects of inflation – in order to complete its R340bn capacity expansion programme and pay off all debts used to finance the construction of new power stations.

The average tariff charged by South Africa’s State-owned power utility will have to increase from 60.66 cents/kWh (kilowatt hour) to 90 cents/kWh “in real terms” to complete its current expansion projects that are scheduled to terminate when the Kusile power station in Mpumalanga comes on stream in 2017, according to financial director Paul O’Flaherty.”
