Kosmos Energy provides potable water for communities

Kosmos Energy Ghana and Safe Water Network have commissioned a facility to provide clean drinking water to some communities in the Jomoro District of the Western Region. The facility, provided with technical assistance from the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, will serve communities such as Nzulezu, Eikwe, Anochie, Ngalekyi, Ngalekpoley, Krisan and Baku.

The water project saw the expansion of existing infrastructure by building two overhead tanks, a distribution network with five remote kiosks and 15 standpipes in the seven communities. These permanent infrastructure enhancements are to enable potable water to be delivered from the water treatment plant in Beyin, installed by the company.

The first phase of this important initiative was completed in April 2013 and provided clean drinking water to approximately 6,000 people in the four communities of Beyin, Ngelekazo, Ekebaku and Atuabo. Upon completion of all the phases, the initiative will produce water stations serving over 20,000 people in several communities in the region.

Mr Kurt Soderland, Chief Executive officer of Safe Water Network, during the commissioning on Thursday, commended Kosmos Energy for improving the health and livelihoods of communities in Ghana through the provision of quality water. Mr Ken Keag, Country Manager of Kosmos Energy Ghana, said; “I am proud that Kosmos can play such a pivotal role in bringing water to the people of Nzulezo and the other communities.

“We are pleased to work alongside these communities and support them in developing the skills necessary to own and operate these systems for the long term”. He said Kosmos Energy was committed to maintaining strong and supportive relationships with its stakeholders to create value and the best foundation for a sustainable business.

He said access to clean water would to enhance and improve lives and also serves as a catalyst for economic development in the communities. Mr Keag said Kosmos Energy would actively engage in other life-changing projects adding; “we believe working with our communities to create value is the right thing to do”.
