Building a culture of sustainability through awareness

“Our move towards a green economy is part of the country’s long-term plan to grow the economy while mitigating the effects of climate change” Buyelwa Sonjica, South Africa’s Water and Environmental Affairs Minister, May 2010.

In order to successfully move South Africa towards a green economy, all spheres of business need to understand the role they play in the transition. One of the cornerstones of a green economy is sustainable development.

Corporate Sustainability and the implementation of sustainability strategies have proved to enhance organizational value and increase company profits .

Sustainability starts with a shift. A shift in the fundamental way we do business, in the way we source our products and in how we use our financial, human and natural resources. This shift, however, can only come about through increased sustainability awareness and training for employees.

Building a culture of sustainability through awareness and literacy training helps move organisations along the sustainability learning curve toward enhanced performance capabilities. Employees move from a vague understanding of sustainability, to a practical application of the concept and how improving environmental, ethical and social performance all impact the company’s bottom line.

Literacy training starts with creating an understanding of climate change and carbon emissions and how those affect corporate sustainability. In house Carbon Literacy training courses for 10 or more people are offered by GCX at your convenience.
