The 3rd annual Hydropower Africa conference and exhibition, hosted by ESI Africa at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg from 16 – 20 August was a resounding success.
More than 300 delegates from over 30 countries participated, and utilities and vendors from across the continent and abroad participated.
    • The opening session featured a keynote presentation by Nelisiwe Magubane, Director-General, Department of Energy, South Africa on how to unlock Africa’s hydropower potential to promote sustainable development, regional integration, water and energy security, and poverty eradication in Africa.

    • The other keynote presentations, from both the African Development Bank and the World Bank, focused on regulatory reforms needed to boost private investment for hydropower development in Africa as well as an overview of investment opportunities and incentives of the African hydropower generation landscape.

    • The session concluded with a high-level panel discussion featuring current projects and future investment prospects for hydropower development in Africa from Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

    • Subsequent sessions included discussions on appropriate dam engineering for hydropower projects in Africa, Project Management and the interface between dam engineering and power engineering.

    • Another highlight was the workshop on developing small hydropower plants, presented by Leonard Kassana from the Ministry of Infrastructure in Rwanda. Presentations on small hydropower projects and future prospects for small hydropower development in Uganda as well as the potential and challenges for small hydropower development in Southern Africa complimented the workshop well.

The event concluded with 3 very successful site visit tours – one to small hydropower schemes in Mpumalanga (Friedenheim and Lydenburg), one to Pumped-Storage schemes in the Kwazulu-Natal (Ingula and Drakensberg schemes) and a site visit tour to Inga – Africa’s biggest hydropower scheme in the DRC.
