African Operators Looking To Use Wind Power To Cut Diesel Use At Off-Grid Sites

Lapp Group Southern Africa will sell and install Zephyr Corporations small wind turbines to operators throughout Southern Africa including Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Operators who would like to talk to Lapp Group Southern Africa about how wind power can replace diesel generators and reduce both CAPEX and OPEX at off-grid sites – as well as how to identify suitable sites – should contact Mark Dilchert, managing director of Lapp Group Southern Africa on +27 82 456 0902 and Zephyr Corporation an established company in the consumer wind turbine market – is exhibiting for the first time at AfricaCom. It is shortlisted in the Telecom Innovation of the Year category at the 3rd annual AfricaCom Awards. One of its wind turbines will be on display at booth D15.

Operators across Africa are now looking to use wind to replace or supplement both solar and diesel-powered generators.

With a diameter of just 1.8 metres and weighing only 17.5 kg thanks to ultralight blades made from carbon fibre, Zephyr Corporations turbines are able to generate power at the lowest wind speed of any turbine on the market today from just 2.5 m/s (5.6 mph). They can be used at both off-grid and on-grid sites; either for new base station deployments; or for retrofitting of existing base stations.

Existing customers include some of the largest operators in the world.

Mats Vilander, Zephyr Corporations GM for EMEA and head of telecoms operations, says: Diesel is no way to power a network. With our wind turbines operators have a reliable energy source with a long life expectancy that is easy to deploy. We estimate an ROI of around 2-4 years with our equipment.

About Zephyr Corporation: Zephyr Corporation was established in 1997 as a specialist manufacturer of small wind turbines (SWT). Headquartered in Japan, Zephyr Corporation has a subsidiary in the US, a regional office in Europe and over 30 distributors and telecom system integrators across the world.

Zephyr Corporation is an active member of the GSMA Green Power for Mobile initiative. This group comprises leading global mobile operators as well as the large infrastructure suppliers and vendors all working to increase the use of alternative energy in the telecoms market.
