Following on from Hyundai’s world cup success as an official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ partner, the automotive giant is now forging the way in being an environmentally responsible company too. This comes as a result of Hyundai’s decision to ensure that their innovative iXpress Roadshow, currently touring the nation, is entirely carbon-neutral. Not an easy feat when the roadshow is stopping off at more than 14 destinations across South Africa until January 2011.
“With such a large scale operation on our hands, we needed to ensure that we had professionals onboard to guarantee that no stone was left unturned in terms of assessing the environmental impact of our roadshow,” says Alan Ross, CEO of Hyundai South Africa. For this reason, GCX a global carbon footprint assessment company has been enlisted to formally assess the event and put together a final report for the company. Once the report is done, Hyundai will buy enough carbon credits to completely offset the energy spent during the roadshow. Added to this, Hyundai will also be planting a number of new trees in schools in and around the areas where the roadshow stops off at.
Talking about the method behind the carbon footprint analysis, Ross explains the thoroughness of the process, “Every stage and element of the roadshow is being assessed for its impact by GCX, from how our invited guests at the launch travelled to the event, to the amount of paper used for brochures and flyers during the road show – it’s all going to be accounted for.”
It’s no surprise that Hyundai are leading the way in South Africa in term of being an innovative ‘green’ automotive brand. The funky i10 was recently voted the most eco-friendly compact for 2010 in the United Kingdom. Not content with being a pioneer in the eco-friendly automotive space, it has also recently been announced that both the iX35 and the Sonata are finalists in the 2011 Wesbank / SAGMJ Car of the Year.
