World leaders have met in Cancun to work towards agreements on how to address the global threat of climate change, and in South Africa the search for Climate Heroes is on.

Community-based organisations, individuals, schools and youth groups who are taking the lead by implementing a range of activities related to combating global warming, will be generously rewarded as Climate Heroes in the Climate Change Leadership Awards (CCLA).

According to Motshoanetsi Lefoka, CEO of The South African Post Office, one of the key sponsors of the CCLA, “We have pledged cash prizes to the value of R100 000 to communities or individuals who are taking the lead in the fight against climate change. We believe that saving our planet starts at grassroots level and we encourage communities and individuals to be the change they want to see.”

Bronwen Rohland, Director of Sustainable Development for Pick n Pay, sponsors of the Climate Hero Schools or Youth Groups category has pledged R35 000 in Pick n Pay gift cards for schools or youth groups who are concerned about the impending crisis that threatens our planet’s existence. “The effects of climate change will be their unfortunate inheritance and now is the time to put words into action.”

Companies showing leadership in climate change response are also invited to participate in the Energy, Minerals and Industrial , Agriculture and Food, SME, Financial Services, Retail and other sectors. Val Geen of the National Business Initiative joins an illustrious group of adjudicators this year, to recognise and reward corporate South Africa for their efforts.

The second annual CCLA will take place in Johannesburg in March 2011. Entries into the prestigious event however, close on 24 February 2011.

The CCLA itself is a carbon neutral event and greening social enterprise supported by The Carbon Protocol. Food & Trees for Africa will plant trees for disadvantaged communities to offset the carbon footprint.
