With South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (finalised in March 2011), it is clear that solar energy is on the rise and is getting a lot more traction than a year ago.
The IRP allocates a staggering 8,400MW of solar PV to be built by 2030, rolling out 300MW of large scale PV per year from 2012 onwards.
Recently, the African Development Bank agreed to a renewable loan of US$365 million, which will boost the South African solar industry, moving it away from an off-grid industry.
According to recent media reports, SA could see its first hybrid power station, which would combine concentrated solar power and coal, after Kusile.
The Department of Energy is also now calling on investors to submit proposals to build the country’s first renewable energy power plants.
