A sanitation system that does not require any water to function. Not only does it save on water use, but it is entirely isolated from the surrounding environment and cannot contaminate underground water resources.
How can sanitation work without water ? The system utilises a natural biological process to break down human waste into a dehydrated odourless compost-like material.
How does it work ? We receive many questions about the toilets, of which ” How does it work ” is the most frequently asked . The following is a brief description of the toilet concept as well as it’s main features.

The human excrement falls down a vertical chute (2) and into one end of a specially designed helical screw conveyor (3). Every time the toilet lid (1) is lifted, a mechanism rotates the conveyor. With each rotation the human excrement slowly moves along, taking approximately twenty five days before falling into a reusable collection bag (4). It takes six months for the bag to fill with dry and odourless waste.

Waterless toilet installed pictureThrough the uniquely designed ventilation pipe (5), adequate airflow is provided for the dehydration / evaporation, deodorising process. Human excrement consists of roughly 95% moisture. As the solids dry in the conveyer the urine and moisture is vented into the atmosphere. The solid waste then dries into a compost-like material, roughly 5 – 10% of it’s original mass.

The dry waste is manageable and can be processed in the following ways.
· Use it in the making of compost · Dispose of it by using municipal waste services · Use it as a source of fuel

Large objects like beverage cans, disposable nappies or other objects accidentally dropped down the chute will not block the system, It is however not advisable to do this
Features No plumbing required..No drains..No pipes..Waterfree..Low odour levels..Chemical free..Relatively light and easy to install

Toilet hut ( optional )
When a toilet is to be installed outside a home, we can supply a toilet hut that has been designed especially for  the toilet system. The toilet can however be installed using any toilet hut structure.
Asian model
This version was developed for countries where toilets differ from the toilets used in other countries. In place of the traditional European type toilet bowl this model has a seat on floor level. Otherwise the basic workings of the toilet is exactly the same as our other toilets.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Prospective customers normally have some questions regarding the  toilet system. Here are some of the questions and the answers to them :

Since there is no water to rinse the bowl how do you prevent “sticking”?
Due to the design and the non-stick surface of the chute, the human waste falls directly into the processing drum and into the area where the air is extracted. As with any other toilet system, periodic cleaning of the bowl is recommended.

How is the odour contained so that the cabinet is not a stink hole.
The system is designed so that all odours are extracted through the bowl, processing drum and then out via the extractor pipe and fans / turbine.

Three air ventilation systems are available, a wind turbine, solar powered D.C. fan and a A.C. fan.

How is the urine handled?
The system was designed to handle normal amounts of urine. In fact it assists with the removal of odours due to the additional ventilation it causes because of evaporation.

Asians are not comfortable with toilet paper and use water for cleaning up. Will this affect the evaporation?
A little bit of water in the system will not cause it to malfunction. It will help in the ventilation / evapouration process.

Does the system use a septic tank?
Because the whole process is a dry process there is no need for a septic tank. Temporary storage takes place inside the processing drum until the waste is dropped into the removal bag.

Is the system patented?
Yes, there are local and International patents registered.

Does the system need any maintenance or special treatment?
No special maintenance of the toilet system is required. As with all other toilets it is recommended that the bowl is cleaned regularly with a soft brush and some soap or toilet cleaner.

How many people can use a toilet?
The toilet was designed for use by a family of 6 to 10 people

Do I need special chemicals to clean the bowl?
No, a bit of liquid soap or disinfectant and water is enough.

Asian communities have different type toilets.
A modified version of the toilet is available at the same cost.
