South Africa may be PV’s new land of opportunity… but with the first wave of projects underway, developers are finding it is not necessarily an easy market to crack.
When Davin Chown introduced the South African market in a recent PV Insider webinar, he started with a slide titled ‘A sea of challenges’. Admittedly the spokesperson for the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association was referring to the energy outlook for the nation.
But it is also true that companies trying to crack the South African PV market have not exactly been having an easy time of it.
Sure, South Africa is betting heavily on green technology. It is relying on renewables to reshape its energy landscape, improve power supply and reduce its reliance on coal. “Solar has a very strong role to play in the decarbonisation of our economy,” states Chown.
