Ilanga Solar Thermal Power Plant, Northern Cape Province

Ilangalethu Solar Power (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial solar thermal plant, located approximately 30 km east of Upington. Proposed Photovoltaic Solar Energy Facility on a site Northwest of Vredendal, Western Cape Province

INCA Vredendal Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 10 km northwest of Vredendal in the Western Cape.  Based on a pre-feasibility analysis and site identification processes undertaken by INCA Vredendal Solar, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and evaluation through an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The project is proposed on portions of the following Farm: Remainder of Farm 277 (Seekoigat).  The site proposed for the facility falls within the Matzikama Local Municipality.  A broader area of approximately 800 ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed. Read more….

Proposed ACSA PV Photovoltaic Installations four airports across South Africa

ACSA PV, comprising The Power Comany, Built Africa, and the Airports Company South Africa, is proposing the establishment of photovoltaic installations, at the OR Tambo International Airport, the Upington International Airport, the Bloemfontein International Airport, and the Kimberley Airport.

Proposed Photovoltaic Solar Energy Facility on a site southeast of De Aar, Northern Cape Province

INCA De Aar Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 8 km southeast of De Aar, in the Northern Cape Province. Based on a pre-feasibility analysis and site identification processes undertaken by INCA De Aar Solar, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and evaluation through an Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA).

The project is proposed on portions of the following Farm: Portion 3 of Farm 4 (Vetlaagte). The site proposed for the facility falls within the Emthanjeni Local Municipality. A broader area of approximately 170 Ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed. Read more….

INCA Kakamas Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 2.5 km west of Kakamas in the Northern Cape province.  Based on a pre-feasibility analysis and site identification processes undertaken by INCA Kakamas Solar, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and evaluation through an Basic Assessment.

The project is proposed on portions of the following Farm: Remainder of farm 1178 (Kakamas Suid Nedersetting).  The site proposed for the facility falls within the Kai Garib Local Municipality.  A broader area of approximately 109 ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed.


Proposed RustMo1 PV Plant Near Buffelspoort, North West Province

Momentous Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing the establishment of a photovoltaic (PV) plant near Buffelspoort, North West Province. The site is approximately 20km south-east of Rusternburg and approximately 10km north-west of Buffelspoort. The proposed facility will have a maximum generating capacity of 7MW.

The proposed project has been registered with the national Department of Environmental Affairs under application reference number 12/12/20/2145.  The Final Basic Assessment Report has been submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs for review and decision making. Read more….

Upington CSTP  (Concentrating Solar Thermal Power)

Eskom plans to pursue technology that includes heat storage, as opposed 
to older technology without storage, in its drive to replace coal-fired power for baseload supply over time. Eskom used strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) criteria to evaluate four technologies: parabolic trough, Fresnel trough, central receiver solar tower, and parabolic dish.  The 
inputs  for the  SWOT evaluation consisted of baseline resource data,  the  limited  availability of water, the capacity of the proposed technology to employ dry or hybrid cooling, the technologies’ suitability for a base and intermediate load-capacity factor above 50%, and the unavailability of 
natural gas.  Based on  the analysis of alternative technologies for solar concentration, only two technologies are recommended for this site: central receiver solar tower and parabolic trough.
Eskom considers a 100 MW central receiver tower plant as the most suitable for its future solar fleet. Seeking  an independent review of the technology, ESKOM appointed an international consultant who  considered  that both  a  parabolic trough and  a  central receiver tower  met  the requirements of a utility-scale CSTP plant, especially for the Upington site. Because the parabolic 
trough is  already commercial, however, it cannot  function as  a pilot and demonstration plant. Moreover, the potential for innovation and cost reduction is  greater  for  a  central receiver tower plant than for parabolic trough technology, because central receiver tower technology is in the first 
stages  of commercialisation,  whereas the  parabolic trough is commercially available technology.  However, the consultant indicated that central  receiver technology of 100 MW is prone to performance risk, because a  plant of the size proposed by Eskom has yet to be built. The development partners, including  the  IBRD, AfDB,  the  EIB, KfW, and  the  AFD, reviewed the 5
consultant’s  recommendations and  agreed  that performance-related risks  could  be mitigated by embedding warranties and performance guarantees in the performance contract to form part of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Read more…..
