Rural market development is made difficult for services are dependent on energy; however, solar products and technologies along with supportive business models are opening up new business opportunities in rural, untapped markets. Vortex Engineering Pvt. Ltd. of Chennai, India, has developed solar ATMs called Gramtellers, with a biometric touch pad , a solar panel and a 12-hour backup battery. These devices are needed in rural areas where people would previously have had to travel long distances to a bank. The solar ATMs also offer a great business opportunity by tapping the rural market segment. By powering the ATMs with solar energy, banks can place the systems in areas that may be grid connected, but that experience frequent power shortages, making grid-connected ATMs not feasible for regular use.Read more……
