One of our members have submitted an interesting project enquiry for Solar power on a Nature Reserve.
GROUP FACILITY (48 BEDS) ON ROLFONTEIN NATURE RESERVE
Kindly submit suggestions for implementation of alternative energy requirements to be forwarded to our member.

Herewith highlights of his enquiry. “The other factor that contributes to the under utilization of the accommodation in the reserve is the lack of any form of electricity which makes causes problems with hot water and for presentations. Alternative forms of electricity must be utilized, which is might be costly at first, but will reduce the long-term costs and set an example for using alternative energy sources.”
Solar electricity must be available to power the lights mentioned above, as well as for two laptops and a data-projector. Two power-points for electric fans must also be available (Power-points: 5 x standard three-point plugs for between 1.5 and 2 KVA
Solar water heaters must be installed with sufficient capacity to cater for 48 people using the showers. This can be supplemented with a gas geyser at one shower each for the male and female sides.
The ablution facility must be divided for male and female use:
Four showers on either side
Four hand basins on either side
Four toilets on female side
Three toilets and three urinals on male side
Floors to be tiled and walls to at least 1.5m, but preferably to ceiling
Each side to have two 1.5m double fluorescent lights (three, if two is deemed inadequate)
A single 30 watt energy saving exterior light must be fitted on either side, with two to three pathway lights from the main building to the ablution facility

KITCHEN UPGRADE:

A single wall must be built around the existing structure (Figure 3) and covered over with natural rock. The inside must be smooth-plastered for hygienic reasons. The existing thatch must be repaired and covered with wire-netting. Two double tube (1.5m) fluorescent lights must be fitted.
