The South African National Energy Research Institute (Saneri) has issued a tender inviting proposals for the supply, installation and commissioning of a 400-kW solar power plant for Robben Island.
The solar technology used would be concentrated photovoltaic solar.
The total electricity requirement for the island, after energy efficiency and demand side management programmes were implemented, was about 600-kW. It was envisaged that solar, wind and bio-gas solutions would supply the islands entire electricity demand over time.
This initiative forms part of the “Greening Robben Island project”, which sits within the “working for energy” programme. It is proposed to reduce the island’s dependence on fossil fuels by installing alternative renewable technology and efficient energy management, and support infrastructures.
