THE Department of Energy yesterday launched the start of the procurement process for the renewable energy feed-in tariff programme through a request for information to potential developers of renewable energy projects.

The request for information affords renewable energy players an opportunity to shape the procurement process of the renewable energy feed-in programme. A renewable energy feed-in tariff is a policy mechanism designed to encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources. The tariff is a guaranteed price at which producers of renewable energy will sell their electricity.
Ompi Aphane, acting deputy director-general in the department, said yesterday: “Our intention in releasing this request for information is to get potential developers of renewable energy projects to indicate their interest in or to provide information on the progress of their projects in SA under the renewable energy feed-in tariff.”
