Pretoria – The approval of the Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariff (REFIT) has been delayed, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) said on Tuesday.

“NERSA today announced a delay in the timelines for the approval of the [REFIT] Review Tariff,” said the regulator.

REFIT is meant to attract investors (independent renewable energy producers) to new power generation going into the future. The tariffs are usually guaranteed over a fixed period of time.

“NERSA is currently analysing and consolidating all information received from stakeholders,” it said, adding that a total of 200 written comments were received, while over 40 presentations were given during the public hearings held earlier this month.

The decision is likely in mid-June this year.

Earlier this year Scott Brodsky, of Dewey & LeBoeuf, said the introduction of a REFIT programme would benefit South Africa in that it will achieve renewable power generation as well as create jobs, while also encouraging investment in the sector. – BuaNews
