12 October 2012 – It has been reported in the Angolan press that the province of Luanda will see an increase in power supply capacity in October and November 2012 when a new thermal power station begins operation.
This was told to Angop by the chairman of National Electricity Company (ENE), José Carlos Neves, at the end of a field trip to the 40 MW thermal stations of Morro Bento, Benfica, Viana and the 110 MW station of Luanda Railways.
During September electricity generation was reduced at the Capanda dam that helps power the capital due to drought having reduced the Kwanza River water levels, the state-owned Jornal de Angola reported. The dam was producing 240 MW compared with a capacity of 520 MW. Production from the hydroelectric scheme was expected to increase from October 2012 once seasonal rains begin. The project sends 80% of its power about 300 km northwest to the capital, Luanda, which suffers daily blackouts.
