To illustrate that renewable and alternative energy is a reality in South Africa, herewith a few projects initiated in the recent past.

INCA Vredendal Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 10 km northwest of Vredendal in the Western Cape.

African Rainbow Energy proposes to establish a Photovoltaic Solar Energy Facility, located on a site near Upington in the Northern Cape.

Ilangalethu Solar Power (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial solar thermal plant, located approximately 30 km east of Upington. The proposed project will be referred to as Project Ilanga and will have a maximum generating capacity of 125 MW. It will be sited on one of several farm portions identified for the future proposed Karoshoek Solar Thermal Park, and will ultimately form part of that larger facility which will have a maximum generating capacity of 1 GW.

Renewable Energy Investments South Africa is proposing the establishment of a commercial solar energy facility on a site located approximately 16 km north west of Kathu. The proposed solar energy facility will have a generating capacity of up to 100 MW which will be comprised of several arrays of either tracking or concentrating photovoltaic panels. The project has been registered with the National Department of Environmental Affairs under reference number 12/12/20/1858.

Vanguard Solar proposes the establishment of a PV Solar Energy Facility on a site near Groblershoop in the Northern Cape.

Ka Xu CSP South Africa (Pty) Ltd proposes the establishment of a commercial solar energy facility on a site near Pofadder in the Northern Cape. The proposed facility will have a maximum generating capacity of 310 MW to be comprised of a combination of technologies, including parabolic troughs, power tower & associated heliostat field and photovoltaic panels. The project has been registered with the Department of Environmental Affairs under reference number 12/12/20/1832.

ACSA PV, comprising The Power Comany, Built Africa, and the Airports Company South Africa, is proposing the establishment of photovoltaic installations, at the OR Tambo International Airport, the Upington International Airport, the Bloemfontein International Airport, and the Kimberley Airport.

INCA De Aar Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 8 km southeast of De Aar, in the Northern Cape Province. Based on a pre-feasibility analysis and site identification processes undertaken by INCA De Aar Solar, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and evaluation through an Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA).

The project is proposed on portions of the following Farm: Portion 3 of Farm 4 (Vetlaagte). The site proposed for the facility falls within the Emthanjeni Local Municipality. A broader area of approximately 170 Ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed.

INCA Kakamas Solar (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of INCA Energy) is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility as well as associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 2.5 km west of Kakamas in the Northern Cape province. Based on a pre-feasibility analysis and site identification processes undertaken by INCA Kakamas Solar, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and evaluation through an Basic Assessment.

The project is proposed on portions of the following Farm: Remainder of farm 1178 (Kakamas Suid Nedersetting). The site proposed for the facility falls within the Kai Garib Local Municipality. A broader area of approximately 109 ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed.

Momentous Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing the establishment of a photovoltaic (PV) plant near Buffelspoort, North West Province. The site is approximately 20km south-east of Rusternburg and approximately 10km north-west of Buffelspoort. The proposed facility will have a maximum generating capacity of 7MW.
The proposed project has been registered with the national Department of Environmental Affairs under application reference number 12/12/20/2145.

VentuSA Energy is proposing the establishment of a solar energy facility on a site located approximately 23 km south-east of Sishen in the Northern Cape Province. The proposed facility will consist of an array of photovoltaic panels (concentrating and/or tracking) and associated infrastructure with a maximum generating capacity of 100 MW

Khi CSP South Africa (Pty) Ltd proposes the establishment of a commercial solar energy facility on Portion 3 of the Farm McTaggarts Camp 453, near Upington in the Northern Cape. The proposed facility will have a maximum generating capacity of 110 MW to be comprised of a combination of technologies, including parabolic troughs, power tower & associated heliostat field and photovoltaic panels.

VentuSA Energy is proposing the establishment of a solar energy facility and associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 20 km south-west of Boshof and approximately 32 km north-east of Kimberley. The proposed facility is to have a generating capacity of up to 50 MW which is to be generated through the use of photovoltaic panels. The project has been registered with the National Department of Environmental Affairs under reference number 12/12/20/1862

Thupela Energy propose the establishment of a solar energy facility in the Waterberg District Municipality in the Limpopo Province on a site near Vaalwater. The facility will be composed of an array of photovoltaic panels with a maximum generating capacity of 5 MW to be constructed on a broader site of approximately 50 ha.

SARGE (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial renewable energy facility consisiting of both a wind energy facility component and a photovoltaic solar facility component including the associated infrastructure on a site south of Victoria West in the Northern Cape Province.

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 6km north-west of Riebeek East and approximately 15km north-west of Alicedale in the Eastern Cape Province. An area which falls within the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality and Makana Local Municipality has been identified for consideration within an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

DNA Wind Farm (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure on a site located within Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province. The proposed wind energy facility is to be developed by Rainmaker Energy Projects (Pty) Ltd. The proposed site is situated in an area approximately 10 km north-east of Indwe, along the R56 regional road. A cluster of up to 24 wind turbines, collectively referred to as a Wind Energy Facility is planned to be constructed over an area of approximately 980 ha in extent.

Windlab Developments South Africa Pty Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility on a site between Cookhouse and Bedford in the Eastern Cape Province. It is proposed for a cluster of up to 350 wind turbines (described as a wind energy facility) to be constructed over an area of approximately 273 km2 in extent. This project is known as the Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility. This project has been registered with National DEA under Application Reference number12/12/20/1754.

VentuSA Energy is proposing the establishment of a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure which will be referred to as the Deep River Wind Energy Facility. The wind energy facility is proposed to be established on an identified site which is located approximately 17 km west of Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, within the Kou-Kamma Local Municipality. The proposed facility will have a generating capacity of up to 100 MW.

Exxaro Resources is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure of up to 66 MW on a site located in the Matzikama Local Municipal area. The proposed wind energy facility will be known as the Exxaro West Coast Wind Farm and is proposed to be constructed on land owned by Namakwa Sands, north-west of Vredendal in the Western Cape Province. The wind energy facility is proposed to accomodate up to 27 turbines, spaced to make use of the wind resource on the sites. The area in which the wind turbines would be situated is an area of approximately 1968 hectares (ha). Associated infrastructure proposed includes a substation, access roads, underground cabling and a 132 kV power line.

BioTherm Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility, (known as the Klipheuwel/ Dassiesfontein Wind Energy Facility) and associated infrastructure on two sites in the Overberg area within the Western Cape Province. The wind farm is proposed to accommodate up to 16 turbines, spaced to make use of the wind resource on the sites. The area in which the wind turbines would be situated is an area of approximately 602 hectares (ha). Associated infrastructure proposed includes 2 substations, access roads and underground cabling.

Renewable Energy Resources (RES) South Africa (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure on a site located approximately 6 km north of Oyster Bay in the Eastern Cape Province. The proposed development will have a generating capacity of up to 160MW.

Exxaro Resources and Watt Energy (Pty) Ltd are proposing to establish a commercial wind energy facility and associated infrastructure on a site located within the Kouga Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province. The proposed site is situated approximately 30 km west of Humansdorp, south of the N2 National Road in the Tsitsikamma area. Based on an extensive pre-feasibility analysis and site identification process undertaken, as well as an analysis of the wind resource in the area, a favourable area has been identified for consideration and assessment as per the requirements of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Wind turbines with a capacity of up to 100 MW, collectively referred to as a wind energy facility, are planned to be constructed over an area of approximately 54 km2 in extent.
