The Ministry of Education has, over the past 10 years, made giant strides in enrolment at both the pre-tertiary and the tertiary levels, with the pre-tertiary recording a 90% enrolment, the Minister for Education, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, has disclosed.

Prof Opoku-Agyeman noted, however, that despite the successes, the educational front still faced challenges in infrastructure and human resource.

The education minister underscored the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in resolving some of the world’s challenges, adding that Ghana’s National ICT policy would be reviewed and implemented on a sustainable basis, hinged on three pillars, each of which would receive slightly different policy intervention emphasis and strategy to ensure effectiveness.

These three pillars, she said, were ICT as a learning and operation tool; ICT as an integral part of teaching and learning; and ICT as a career option for students.

She said in view of the important role that education played in the socio-economic development of a nation and given what was unfolding in the international arena, education should lead in the area of ICT.

Prof Opoku-Agyeman was speaking in an address delivered on her behalf at the launch of a Solar Operated Laptop (SOL) in Accra, yesterday.

The Solar Operated Laptop, the first of its kind in the world, is a private sector initiative in ICT geared towards the development of education in Africa.

The initiative is being spearheaded by WeWi Telecommunications Inc ―a Canadian R&D Corporation dedicated to bringing innovative solutions to the market ―and marketed by WeWi Ghana.

In a presentation, Mr Roland Carson, Chief Technical Officer of WeWi Inc, said since its inception, the company had created unique products and services and, in the past several years, began exploring new markets and expanding internationally through its various subsidiaries.

Mr Carson said WeWi’s core competencies were in software, hardware development and systems integration while its main focus was creating highly specialized solutions servicing the government, defence and health sectors where the company’s core integrated team of award winning experts was both experienced and comfortable serving government institutions, military bodies and civil initiatives.
