The World Sports Alliance (WSA), an intergovernmental body that supports the United Nations’ poverty reduction goals, plans to invest via its commercial capital management arm, US$200 million to build a waste to energy processing plant in the Central African Republic (CAR). This programme being initiated in the first quarter of 2013 is to see the implementation of a municipal waste private public partnership project that will generate 22.5 MW of electricity for the capital Bangui.

The project, within the framework of WSA’s mission of significant sports and community infrastructure and youth programs, will enable the development of US$60 million of such sporting infrastructure, aimed at positively impacting the country’s social harmony.

The Central African Republic, whose government is under threat of rebel military action, is one of the world’s poorest nations with an annual gross domestic product of US$3.6 billion. Less then 3% of the country’s population have access to electricity.
