The Cape Verdean Prime Minister is due to travel to Germany this year to sign an agreement for the plan of action for the “Cape Verde 100% renewable energy” project, according to the West African archipelago’s press.
This will be the second time José Maria Neves has visited the country as part of the partnership that Cape Verde wants to set up with Germany to carry out an ambitious programme to allow the archipelago to stop using fossil fuels for electricity production by 2020.
The invitation for the visit was made by the Deputy Minister-President and Minister for Economic Affairs, Climate Protection, Energy and Regional Planning of Rhineland-Palatinate, Eveline Lemke, who Friday concluded a two-day visit to Cape Verde.
Lemke said that state companies had solutions and that cape Verde was interested and the only thing that was left to decide was funding for the programme, she said, giving assurances that Germany wanted to begin the partnership “as soon as possible.”
On his first visit, in April 2012, to Rhineland-Palatinate, one of Germany’s 16 states, located in the southwest of Germany, the Cape Verdean Prime Minister called for the government to rethink its renewable energy strategy and set more ambitious targets to achieve a 100 percentage usage rate by 2020.
The two-day visit by the Deputy Minister-President and Minister for Economic Affairs, Climate Protection, Energy and Regional Planning of Rhineland-Palatinate to Cape Verde ended with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the energy sector.
